14 Cartoons Parents Loved as Kids

They just don't make 'em like they used to! Growing up in the good old days, cartoons were only on television on Saturday mornings, and for about an hour after school. But they were well worth the wait. We had a lot of fun putting this compilation of our favourite 80's cartoons together. Each of us intermittently drifting into a nostalgic daydream...

He-Man

Nobody can forget He-Man, 'The Most Powerful Man in the Universe!' And of course, his super cool twin sister She-Ra. Surely, we all had a He-Man toy growing up, and rescued a Barbie or two with 'The Sword of Power!'

Dastardly and Muttley in their Flying Machines AKA Catch the Pigeon

Oh we all fondly remember the catchy theme tune and the snickering laugh of Muttley at the end of every episode, when Dastardly's attempts to catch Yankee Doodle Pigeon fail miserably, once again!

Here's a video of Muttley's laugh because we know you want to hear it!

Top-Cat

It was hilarious watching Top Cat AKA T.C and his gang of Manhattan alley cats regularly scheming up ways to earn a quick buck. Not to mention the lovable local beat cop Charlie Dibble ever failing at his attempts to evict the gang from the alley.

Strangely, watching this intro credit video of Top Cat aroused a distinct memory of Cornflakes with cold milk (not kidding). Then we discovered that the show was co-sponsored by Kellogg's! How scary is that!?

Speedy Gonzales

Four words. Arriba Arriba! Andale Andale!

Wile E. Coyote and The Road Runner

Beep Beep! Oh dear! It was so comical to watch Coyote dream up elaborate plans and absurdly complex contraptions, to catch Roadrunner - in every episode - only for everything to backfire on him with good old slapstick humour! One of the most entertaining cartoons of the time!

Danger Mouse

A parody of British spy fiction (like James Bond). Did you know a reboot of the series started running on CBBC in 2015!

Inspector Gadget

Nah nah nah nah nah Inspector gadget nah nah nah nah nah umm umm. We all loved this cartoon as kids - watching an incompetent and clueless detective fully kitted up with endless gadgets surviving his perils by sheer luck. Oh and the help of Penny of course!

Tom and Jerry

Genius. Pure genius. The new one's don't really make the mark do they?

Thundercats

Thundercats hoooooooo! This cartoon made us feel cool just watching it! Remember Lion-O's Sword of Omens? He'd use it to see across huge distances. Tygra was super cool too, but our favourites were WilyKit and WilyKat! Admit it, you were a bit scared of Mumm-Ra right?

The Sylvester & Tweety Mysteries

We fondly recall Sylvester's sloppy trademark lissssp, and the way he would get a good beating off-screen by sweet old Grandma for trying to eat cute little Tweety!

The Flintstones

Did you know Fred and Wilma first made it on prime-time American TV in 1960!

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

Initially they were called Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles, so no, you are not making that up in your head. Loved the diversity of personalities these four displayed.

The Care Bears

Awwwww. Somehow this cartoon made us feel warm and loved, and really really angelic. Not the boys though. They pretended not to like it. They're still pretending.

The Smurfs

We couldn't remember the intro to this cartoon of a village full of blue gnomes, so we looked it up. It's pretty annoying actually! Here listen. But we still loved these guys, and one gal.

Leave a comment if we missed one that you really enjoyed as a child!
